Senior Medicare Patrol, U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources and U.S. Department of Justice, warns of Medicare Card Scam

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a department of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will begin mailing new Medicare cards to beneficiaries in April of this year. This is an effort to remove Social Security numbers from all Medicare cards by April 2019. During this transition, there is a potential for con-artists to use the opportunity to attempt to steal personal information. This information can be used to steal identities, to bill Medicare for services not received, and much more. The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) wants all seniors and their caregivers to be aware of this scam threat and potential fraud as new cards are distributed.  SMP offers these tips to protect seniors:
  • Beware of phone calls from someone claiming to be from Medicare or Social Security regarding a "new" Medicare card.
  • Do not give out your Medicare number or any other personal information to someone you do not know.
  • Call SMP toll-free, 877-272-8720, if you think your number is being used for scams, waste, or abuse.
  •  Stop Medicare Fraud website
